REMARKS: True collectible-grade Antique Enamel Lady Portrait ‘Chinese Duplex-type’ Pocket watch from Fleurier Switzerland. It comes with a stunning Enamel Portrait of an European Lady dressed in blue and white and wearing a feathered hat from the 1800s with brilliant red background. The enamel caseback also has wavy guilloche engine-turned pattern underlying the red enamel to complete the artistic masterpiece. The case is made from Silver Gilt, with Seed Pearls adorning the entire bezel. These types pocket watches are generally known as ‘Chinese Duplex/Caliber’ watches as they were mainly sold to the Far East starting from around 1830s by Bovet of Fleurier Switzerland. Chinese Duplex watches can come with duplex, lever or cylinder escapements. Swiss Fleurier was recognized as one of the European centers of fine enamel work and thus many of these watches intended to be sold in China were masterfully adorned with some of the finest enamel work known. Usage of the cylinder escapement which conforms with European watchmaking norm circa 1830-50s.
CONDITION REPORT: Condition-wise the watch runs for a short while and then stopping. The movement is very dry and will need service and oiling to get it running well. It winds and sets. We cannot make any guarantee to its mechanical function as it’s an antique timepiece more than 160 years old. Please be reminded that this watch is 160+ years old and it was never designed to run as accurately as today’s mechanical watches. Cosmetically this watch is in very good condition for its age.
