REMARKS: Ornate and historical Elgin 14K Multi-Color Solid Gold Hunting Case Pocket Watch with Box Hinge. The Multi-Color Solid Gold Case has a pleasing theme with two flying birds each side on the front and back covers flying towards the middle in which all of the birds are made in multi-color gold colors as well. The multi-color embellishments on the case are done in a flowing pattern to resemble a flowing airstream. The dustcover is entirely engraved with its provenance as a presentation gift from railroad employees of the I.C.R.R. (Illinois Central Railroad) Mississippi division to Mr. D.C. Ramsey. For them to present such an ornate and luxurious pocket watch which must have been very expensive in 1897 shows the gratitude of the presentors. On the caseback there is a faceted-cut diamond approximately 10-15pt in weight. Inside the watch an Elgin B.W. Raymond 18-size grade 27 movement with 15j serves as the timekeeper circa 1889.
CONDITION REPORT: Condition-wise the watch is running but we have not timed it and it has not been serviced so we don’t offer any guarantee on timekeeping. Most likely it will require full service if the owner wants to use it frequently. Cosmetically the white enamel dial is in great condition with a nearly invisible hairline near the 7 o’clock marker. The 14K solid multi-color gold case is in fantastic shape with the appliques and embellishments still clearly visible with details. There is some smoothing of the sharp edges of the case. There is no apparent dings or dents to the outside of the case. This is a true box hinged case, diameter is 53mm, total weight is 145.8 grams. It is a true piece of history of American transportation industry worthy to be in any antique watch collection.
