REMARKS: Rare antique Chinese Caliber Duplex Escapement Pocket Watch Movement with Dual Time ‘Captains Watch’ Display. Chinese Duplex or Chinese Caliber Watches were a special category of Swiss Exported Timepieces exclusively to China from the 1830-1890s that almost all originated from Fleurier Switzerland. As Fleurier was one of the centers of European high grade enamel craft, these China-bound watches often had some of the most elaborate and artistic enameling ever seen on pocket watches. Many different types and styles were exported to China, such as this one that had the specialized pointed-tooth Duplex Escapement that allowed for the large center second hand to jump once a second. This particular example was made in the ‘ship captain’s watch’ display with two separate subdials displaying two timezones.
CONDITION REPORT: Condition-wise this watch movement winds and runs dial side up. It runs and stops when the movement side is flipped up. We do not make any functional guarantee to this timepiece and it is sold for parts only. We also do not guarantee that any of the parts are missing or damaged, again the buyer should view this as parts for restoration purpose only. The center post originally housing the large center seconds jump hand has been bent, and both of the minute hands for the subdials are missing as well as the large center seconds jump hand. Cosmetically the dial has hairlines near the outer edge at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions. The dial center hole has some minor chipping as well as close to the 30min outer peripery. Overall the dial is in good condition considering its age and current state out of the watch case, it can be a great replacement for other similar specimen. Gilt movement is highly tarnished. Diameter is 49mm.
